Link Building in the Era of AI

Link building in AI search: a glossary

Witness statement

What is Witness statement?

A witness statement is this book's term for a link once the surrounding page is read rather than counted: the value sits in what the page says about you, not in the link itself.

Who uses the term Witness statement?

The term is this book's own framing rather than established industry vocabulary. It is used by the four authors and by Omnipressent in the book's published description.

The nearest widely used equivalents are brand mention and unlinked citation, both of which describe the evidence without describing the shift in what the evidence is for.

A vote is counted. A witness statement is read. That is the whole distinction, and it changes what a good placement looks like: an accurate mention on a modest page can outweigh an unread link from a strong one.

A brand mention is a thing that exists on a page. A witness statement is what that mention becomes when a retrieval system uses it as evidence about you.

Chapter 1 sets the whole book on this distinction: when an AI system decides whether to recommend a business it does not measure pressure, it gathers witnesses. Every page that names you is a witness statement, and the link is simply what connects that statement to your entity beyond doubt.
